Who We Serve
By providing free, high quality primary care to the uninsured and inadequately insured, we address the immediate basic needs of economically disadvantaged people in Maine. Many of our patients work two, even three part-time positions in the fishing, agricultural, or hospitality industries. Full time employment opportunities are limited as is comprehensive healthcare insurance. If an employer does offer insurance, it is often of the “catastrophic” type with unaffordable deductibles for primary care.
The Ellsworth Free Medical Clinic offers unique and much needed, vital services to Mainers. The Clinic’s primary healthcare services address the immediate needs of economically disadvantaged people in the State of Maine.
Adults 18 and over are eligible, patients with no insurance or those with a high deductible
Counties served: Hancock, Penobscot, Washington, Waldo, Knox, Kennebec, Somerset, Cumberland, Lincoln.

While we do not provide urgent or walk-in care, we have a robust primary care focus. Our medical staff act as the first contact and principle point of continuing care for patients within the health care system and coordinates other specialist care the patient may need.
Our patients –
Through June 2023, our clinic has provided 465 primary care visits
including 19 new and 446 follow up patients. Our volunteers have
contributed over 600 hours and the value of the medical care provided is
estimated to be over $81,000 thus far. In addition, we continue to offer a
prescription assistance program for our patients to receive medications at
no cost. We also offer an efficacious mental health counseling program to
our patients through a referral from our primary care providers. Our
counselor is seeing up 6 to 7 patients weekly for private sessions.
Our patients have numerous medical issues that require assessment and monitoring with frequent medication adjustments in order to maximize their health. Furthermore, patients are referred for laboratory, x-ray, EKG and other studies as indicated by the physician evaluation of the patient’s symptoms and reports.
